The holiday season is a special time in the lives of our families, churches, mosques and synagogues. Gratitude flows easier than ever from our hearts during the season as we start reviewing another year that's approaching its end.

Mourning can be done in different languages and in different faiths, but the loss feels the same.

Disabled Muslims Lobby for Better Access to Mosques
Disabled Muslims Lobby for Better Access to Mosques

August 30 - Every Friday afternoon, Betty Hasan-Amin asks her caretaker to help her tie a brightly patterned scarf around her head, making sure no strands of hair escape. In the next room, her husband finishes his ablution, the ritual washing Muslims conduct before praying.

At 12:45, the couple departs for the congregational prayers held at their neighborhood mosque in Atlanta. Though the mosque is only about 25 minutes from her home in Stone Mountain, Amin usually leaves more than an hour before the prayers begin.
"It takes me much longer than an average person to get prepared," said Amin, 57, who became a quadriplegic after a spinal cord accident in 1966. She has only limited mobility in her arms and fingers. "This is why I always try and leave extra time for myself."

Re the Tuesday letter, "Where is outrage over teen's death?": Contrary to the author's assertion, "once again, our Muslim brothers here in South Florida have missed an opportunity to show some humanity by publicity," our response was not of publicity, it was one of sorrow and repudiation.

I share part of a letter written to Rabbi Yisroel Spalter and Dr. Laurence Kutler Director of David Posnack Hebrew Day School.

Will We Make A Difference
Will we make a difference?
Now that Chunukah, Christmas, Eid Ul Adha, and Kwanza are over let us utilize this moment of sanity and serenity to reflect and decisively determine who we’re going to elect to lead this great nation of ours. Neglecting to vote is no longer an option, we have to vote, let this be our new year’s resolution.
